things to do in PVD: RISD museum

elizabethcraneswartz.comI'd heard great things about the RISD Museum and was dying to visit. shortly before we moved, Lulu and I had some time to kill while in Providence so we checked it out.

it's lovely. it has an impressive collection of about 100,000 pieces ranging from ancient to contemporary art, from paintings to textiles to sculpture to prints. (there's a great impressionist exhibit that runs now until June 11.)

and because it's a teaching museum, when we visited we passed through several groups - how amazing is this 'classroom' in The Angelo Donghia Costume and Textiles Study Center? and as you move from collection to collection, you wander from the newer, contemporary galleries into galleries housed in stately former residences. it's as much fun to walk the museum as it is to see the work.

elizabethcraneswartz.comand after you wound your way from the North Main Street entrance all the way up to the Benefit Street entrance, you end up in Café Pearl in the Pearl and Ernest Nathan Gallery (operated by Bolt Coffee - as in the super chic Dean Hotel Bolt Coffee.)

and there's a free event called Third Thursdays -

Night-time fun at the RISD Museum. Come check out what we’re all about—watch demos, experiment with art-making materials, hear from students about their work, and learn to look at art and design in a new way. Not your average Thursday evening.

who wants to go with me?
