my youngest had a field trip with her arts administration class to Mass MoCA this past saturday. north adams, massachusetts is about a 2.5-hour drive from providence so it only took two seconds to decide to meet her there. I'm not necessarily a big contemporary art fan but the space is incredible - 26 buildings connected by courtyards, bridges, and elevated walkways - and the sheer scale of the art is impressive. oh, and the Sol Lewitt retrospective is my absolute favorite.

"105 of LeWitt’s large-scale wall drawings, spanning the artist’s career from 1969 to 2007. These occupy nearly an acre of specially built interior walls that have been installed - per LeWitt’s own specifications - over three stories of a historic mill building situated at the heart of MASS MoCA’s campus."

asking other people to take your photo rarely works out - how is this one not even in focus? but I find the two of us adjusting our pants hilarious.

we spent about three hours wandering, getting lost, working on abby's 'scavenger hunt' (take an elevator, find something that recognizes a donor, listen to two museum-goers talking, etc.) and we could've spent another three hours. I'm sure we missed things.

this untitled piece by Anish Kapoor was so fun. not only did it fracture your reflection, it created a really interesting effect to sound when you got close.

and surprise! it's concave, not convex.

if you find yourself in or near western massachusetts, I highly recommend visiting Mass MoCA. they have a nice cafe in the entrance but there's also a great bistro in one of the other buildings and a brewery, too. not far from Mass MoCA is The Clark museum, the Williams College Museum of Art, and so many more great museums. you could stay at The Porches Inn and hit them all up.

sometimes it's easier (and more fun) just to use the self-timer.
