NEW LIFE FOR A VINTAGE CANVAS

NEW LIFE FOR A VINTAGE CANVAS

I bought a beautiful, vintage-ish canvas from Faison Weiss back in the fall when she was de-stashing. it’s about 13” “square” with fun curves and I think it’s probably a pillow canvas. I didn’t love the colors on the canvas but I loved the crane motif (I wonder why…). I knew switching up the colors would be easy with my fiber choices but I wasn’t sure if I would finish it as a pillow. I wanted to be smart about it so I mocked up color choices in procreate on my iPad.

it’s no secret I love the color green so it was the obvious starting point. I thought I’d mix in some teal blues but the yellow was a big maybe so I started with the bird. after working through my blue-green palette I knew the yellow bird wasn’t going to work so I went on the flowers and loved the hit of pink and orange.

I struggled with how to handle the top and left sections and ripped out A LOT of stitches. eventually, I landed on a simple palette and went with it. I used my standard Silk & Ivory “Pink Lemonade” for the background but kinda wish I stuck with white. that’s neither here nor there because it looks SO GOOD!!

I decided I don’t want another pillow and I’d love to have it as a panel on the back of my jean jacket. it’s all blocked and ready to finish but I need to figure out where to take it. I have a very talented tailor but I’m not sure he knows how to work with needlepoint. I could take it to my local needlepoint shop but chances are good I won’t see it for 6 months because finishers are so backed up.

either way, I’m so happy with the way it came out. I bought a few more vintage canvases with big plans to re-color them!
